Project 4 - Stop Motion
"Flight"

My inspiration for this project comes from two places. My first great influence is the cult classic film The Wizard of Speed and Time, which does intense amounts of stop motion. In particular there is a scene in that movie where the protagonist takes shots of him jumping on a wall. Later the footage is edited together to make it look as though he is running along the wall. My other inspiration was a gif I saw of someone frozen in the air from jumping, but waving their arms around. So I thought to myself that it would be cool to explore something humans normally can't do. I also didn’t want to overcomplicate things too much. Thus the idea for “Flight” was born.

My basic concept was to have someone go up on the roof, put their arms up, then fly away. I expanded on that idea with a mix of stop motion with live action backgrounds to make things more interesting. My friend who agreed to be my actor also made things interesting by having a more static pose every time he jumped. I think it made it a lot more interesting.

Designing a lot of the visual elements was fun, but the sound proved to be a little bit of a challenge initially. I think what made it all come together though was putting in light comical sound effects and a short weird vocal track I found on freesound.org. All together it gave it a great effect of being utterly silly and cartoon-like. Given that bits of my visual had a cheesy style of motif, I think the audio ended up pairing fairly well and made it the project very amusing.
